Vice In Video Games
By Lim Meng Liang of SG Online
Video Games have come a long way since the days of the Pac-Man or Tetris Puzzle. Back then, video games had many limitations on graphics, sound effects along with a long list of other constraints. Since then, technology have advanced greatly lead by game developers who have consistently pushed technology to the edge. Video games today are extremely diverse and can accurately portray many realistic events, it could be an innocent baseball match, the depiction of war, violent scenes or almost anything. Some games today also contains extremely violence scenes, partial nudity, uses of drugs, profanity or even sexual content. An example of such a video game would be the Grand Theft Auto series which has consistently encountered many controversies regarding the amount of violence portrayed in the game and the purported negative influence it had on teenagers and young children. The series usually depicts organised crimes and players are rewarded for committing crimes successfully; stealing of cars, robbery etc. Despite the amount of violence and controversy, the Grand Theft Auto series has consistently high ratings from game reviewers and has sold millions of copies on the Playstation or Xbox. Should we be worried? I personally think that video games are not any less violent or negative then movies, however due to the fact that video games are mostly played by children or teenagers, it would be best for parents to keep a tab on what your kid is playing.(Games can really be very very violent) Many popular games and best-selling games today contains lots of vice and violence, how do we know whats suitable and whats not? Fortunately for consumers, game ratings institutions were setup sometime back to provide such information. North American versions of video games usually contain labels by the ESRB while European versions of video games usually contain labels by PEGI, I have attached some pictorial examples of these labels and you can find out more in the links to their respective official websites. |
