A Brief Overview Of The Final Fantasy Series (Video Game)
By Lim Meng Liang of SG Online
The first title from the Final Fantasy series was created by Hironobu Sakaguchi and released by Square (Now Square Enix) in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Since then, various other titles for the Final Fantasy series have been released and have been major hits in the video game industry. Today, the 13th instalment of the series was released on 9th Mar 2010 with many other prequels, sequels and movies that were released under the Final Fantasy series. The popularity of the Final Fantasy series is very unique in the video games industry, there are very few titles that can maintain popularity for such a long time; few titles that can continue to reinvent their image, branding, game play, characters and continue to successfully remain a dominant title. One of the first major hits for the Final Fantasy came in 1997 when Final Fantasy VII was released on the Playstation console. The game has recorded sales of 10 million copies worldwide and remains one of the highest rated and most popular games of all time. The game was renowned for its role-playing elements, game play, characters and a futuristic storyline that were brought to life with music composed by Nobuo Uematsu and incredible story-telling techniques. The main characters of the game such as Cloud Strife, Aerith and Sephiroth have become so popular such that they are a regular scene at anime cosplay events. One of the unique features of games coming from the Final Fantasy series would be its very unique characters; some are eccentric, bizarre or even “cool” . There is always a very nice mix of characters in any titles that compliment the cutting edge graphics that the series offers. The lead character of Final Fantasy VI was a “semi-Esper”, in Final Fantasy VII it was a “Mako Infused Soldier”, in Final Fantasy IX it was a teenager with a tail and in Final Fantasy X, it was Tidus – a character created by “Fayth’s Dreaming”. In most of the series, surreal environments are accompanied with surreal characters with very intricate details and planning that brings a gamer through a series of plots and events that fully develops a character and tell a great story. The Final Fantasy series has remained as popular as it is today as about a decade ago with the latest Final Fantasy XIII in HD graphics on the Playstation 3. It has achieved ratings of 8.5 to 9.5 from numerous game-reviewers and has sold 5.5 million copies worldwide just a few months after being released. I would certainly look forward to the next Final Fantasy series which have been stated to be a MMORPG – a break from the usual RPG game.
